Examine the impact of green methods and technologies on the environmental sustainability of supportive education buildings, perspectives of circular economy and net-zero carbon operation

Purpose This study investigates the barriers and drivers of using green methods technologies (GMTs) in supportive educational buildings (SEBs) South Africa, assesses their impact on circular economy (CE) achieving net-zero carbon goals. While there has been extensive literature building technologies, is limited research GMT SEBs, as well Design/methodology/approach adopts an interpretivist approach with ontological basis, overarching case a SEB at University Cape Town (UCT). Semistructured interviews were conducted executive UCT management, field survey education was performed. Findings At UCT, multiple GMTs have installed across various to enhance monitoring management water energy consumption. Moreover, initiatives positively influence student behavior, such energy-saving campaigns around premises, introduced. The findings further indicate that recently emphasized implementation GMTs, resulting improved resource efficiency, CE practices progress toward targets for university whole. Originality/value highlights positive SEB’s operations. As result, facility managers should consider incorporating when planning development or refurbishment SEBs.
